The Story
Located in south Tel Aviv, 17 Hahashmal St is a unique and playful design solution, preserving yet creating an addition to an existing Modernist historic apartment villa from the 1930s. In a part of Tel Aviv that’s full of early Modernist specimens, the project seeks to balance a design approach that’s respectful of these traditions and yet forward-looking and contemporary. By following the existing building lines and curves and creating an addition that’s balanced yet striking, a result that’s superior to the original was created.
Using the wooden shutter system as a design focal point, 17 Hahashmal St creates a unifying element between the existing and additional components of the structure. Mixing white plaster, concrete and brown oak, we achieved a design that’s harmonious in its composition. Moreover, by adding weight to the upper portion of the design, using shutters that push dramatically outwards, we were able to come forward with an architectural statement that’s bold yet tasteful, without harming the building’s proportions.
